"Humanities in Space" conference officially opened the second edition of the UNIVERSEH project!

The three-day conference "Humanities in Space'' opened the second edition of the UNIVERSEH project. It attracted the attention of students, scientists and professionals from the space industry. During the event held on the AGH campus from March 11th to 13th, 2024, participants shared knowledge and experiences. We mainly focused on the role of humanities in the space industry.

Time to summarize the past week, which proved to be incredibly intense and inspiring! From March 11th to 13th, 2024, a cosmic conference "Humanities in Space" took place at the AGH University. It officially opened the second edition of the international UNIVERSEH project. It’s the partnership among seven prestigious European Universities which form the European Space University for Earth and Humanity.

During the three-day event, we hosted students, lecturers, and staff from six partner Universities. It was not only an opportunity for knowledge exchange but also an excellent occasion for relationship-building and deepening our cooperation. The event was also made accessible to partner Universities in Ukraine, who followed the conference online.

On the first day, we listened to lectures from four amazing speakers who afterwards engaged in a debate on the role of humanities in the space industry. Our speakers were:

  • Joost Vanreusel (ESA - European Space Agency)
  • Prof. Thais Russomano (InnovaSpace)
  • Dr. Joanna Pyrkosz-Pacyna (AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow)
  • Prof. Loredana Santo (Università di Roma Tor Vergata)

Later on, students participated in a Q&A session - they had the opportunity to ask questions to representatives from space firms and agencies. During subsequent meetings, members of Student Research Clubs presented their unique space-related projects currently in progress.

All UNIVERSEH members also participated in numerous workshops and team-building sessions, facilitating stronger relationships and cooperation. Integration time was provided during a ceremonial dinner. Special awards were presented to the most engaged UNIVERSEH students, whom we congratulate warmly!

We hope that the conference was a positive experience for everyone, providing new inspiration and ideas, and strengthening the bonds between partner universities. We look forward to seeing the themes raised by the speakers continued and developed in further research and actions.

May the space industry become more inclusive and open, and the use of space resources be conducted in a sustainable and responsible manner. Remember, as Dr. Joanna Pyrkosz-Pacyna said during her speech, "space is for you, you are good enough!"
